“At its core, Magic Mirror is going to enable EightBit community members the opportunity to change the appearances of their Bits - but at the contract level.”
📖 Prologue
A year or so ago, I wrote a thread on how the crypto market has evolved over time. The gist of it was that while 10 years ago there was basically only Bitcoin, nowadays there is so much noise out there it can be hard to know what to do with your money. Back then, a bet on Bitcoin meant a bet on crypto, and so if crypto was going to succeed, so would Bitcoin. Obviously, times have changed.
With so many different protocols these days, it’s not as simple as just “betting on crypto” anymore - you actually have to pick which horse you want to win the race. These days, it’s the same with NFTs.
It’s not enough to simply exist like it was for Bitcoin ten years ago. Nowadays, you need to have an actual plan, a great team, a strong community, and oftentimes you need to be doing something unique that no one else is doing from a technical point of view.
Enter: Magic Mirror.
🔑 The EightBit Missing Key Update (v2.4)
A few weeks ago, the team dropped the trailer for Magic Mirror during the official team spaces when discussing the patch notes for EightBit v2.4! If you missed it, check it out below!
If you’d like to catch up on the spaces itself and either listen to or read what was said, check out the following link here.
As you can see, the Magic Mirror trailer constitutes the first part of the lore behind EightBit, and one of the things that stood out was the awesome story-telling aspect of it all. Between the incredible music, the scrolling text, and the sound-effects, it was like being instantly transported back to some of the greatest games of our childhood.
It’s pretty awesome to see the story-telling aspect of our EightBit Universe instead of just dryly dropped updates - which certainly would be easier and less time-consuming. In fact, it shows where the team’s priorities lie - we want to make this an immersive experience and lifting the curtain back to show the community some of the lore and story-telling aspects of what is to come certainly accomplishes that.
What is Magic Mirror?
So, what exactly is Magic Mirror? It’s a great question, and one that we will continue to reveal throughout these upcoming weeks. At its core, Magic Mirror is going to enable EightBit community members the opportunity to change the appearances of their Bits - but at the contract level.
Right now, if you want to change your Bit’s appearance, you simply head over to the EightBit.Me website, connect your wallet, go to the Builder, and change your Bit as you see fit. However, these changes only occur off-chain on the website itself, and therefore, the metadata of your Bit stays the same at the contract level. This is why the changes don’t change the way your Bit looks on OpenSea, for example.
With Magic Mirror, however, owners will have the chance to change their Bit’s appearance at a contract level - effectively minting a new Bit which will be visible on OpenSea and other marketplaces. This new Bit will have updated metadata to include all of the changes you made! For example, if you have a biggie sweater in your loot, and you equip it on your bit and utilize the Magic Mirror, your “new” Bit will have the biggie sweater trait!
This is an extremely exciting update that the team has been working tirelessly on. The ability to change the metadata of your NFT however you see fit on-chain is truly a game changer. Going forward, I’m very excited to see all of the awesome applications that this technological achievement can bring forth.
Where’s the Key?!
If you listened to the spaces or even just checked out the Magic Mirror trailer above, you probably heard something about a key. I can’t go into too many details quite yet, but the goal is to aim to get key access out there within the next couple of months. In terms of where you’ll be able to find them, however, you’ll just have to wait and see!
🫂Featured Community Member: TechF19
We’ve been looking for ways to highlight great community members for a while now, and with our new newsletter Bit by Bit, we found the perfect medium. Going forward, you can expect to see a community member featured each week in our newsletter, so if you’re interested in participating, please reach out!
Let’s start with the basics. Providing as much or as little information as you’d like, tell us a little bit about yourself and how you entered the web3 space.
My name is Tech, and I’ve been in the tech space for about 5 years. Even though I was busy building in Web 2.0, I never really got heavy into crypto during previous cycles. I got back into it all during the lockdown as I started to learn more about fiscal and monetary policies and the real threat of debasement. This lead me to BTC and from there a bit more of Eth. I have been stacking sats since then and jumped in the Web 3.0 world with my first NFT back in March. I did well on a flip but wanted more from a community, especially through the bear market. I love learning new things and getting more into the weeds of all things Web 3.0 has been a blast. Now, I get to speak to tons of very intelligent people daily from all over the world who are equally hungry to learn and add more to the ecosystem.
How did you stumble upon EightBit and identify it as a project/community that you wanted to be a part of?
I found out about the project through an alpha group I was in for a week or so and learned about the history dating back to 2011. I then tuned into a Twitter Spaces where they were interviewing Addison and fell in love with the story about reviving his passion project but in Web 3.0. Hearing his love for EightBit and getting a second shot at it made me want to support the project. Then once I was in the community, I met so many amazing people that I can't imagine going through this current cycle without them all!
What other NFTs do you hold and believe in?
I currently hold some Ghouls as my first entrance into a PROOF-related NFT. They are still early, but Dead Birds Society seems to have big plans for their holders and has already shown they can deliver value through the creation of the Underground. I'm excited to see what comes of the project. Art is great, supply is low, and vibes are high! Dead is Dead!
What are two of your favorite movies and why?
Dune because the lore is amazing and the movie was much more amazing than I thought it would be both from a storyline and visual perspective. It’s so good that it made me think about getting into the books!
American Psycho because Christian Bale is such a great actor, and this dark comedy satirizes the investment world so well! There are so many great parts and it throws you for a loop right up to the credits!
What is your favorite video game from your childhood and why does it stand out to you?
Halo was the first video game that I remember playing besides something on the GameCube with my younger siblings. The games that came out over the next couple years were staples of my childhood as I'd have my friends come over and game all night, but I also would play through the campaign on multiplayer with my father. It was quite the bonding experience as he and I would spend hours trying to get through the game on legendary, and I can recall being able to skip a couple days of school when the new one would drop. So, not to get too sentimental, but it was a great time that we both spent together, and this video game series has a special place in my heart.
Who or what is your favorite musical artist/band/musician and why?
Tame Impala. Kevin Parker is one of the most impressive artists of this generation, and I want to see him live SOO bad! Being a one-man band is impressive, particularly to be able to bring about commercial success.
If you could get one message out to your fellow EightBit holders, what would it be?
Come vibe in the discord more! There are so many great conversations being had all of the time and the access to the team is awesome. Besides that, I would say to everyone to be patient. Zoom out and realize there are so many factors at play in the Crypto and NFT space. The team is building weekly - enjoy the vibes and remember Bit by Bit!
